Zimbabwe limped to 106 for 8 in the opening game of the T20 Canada tournament, at King City, after the match was reduced to 17 overs per side by a damp outfield. Sri Lanka's bowlers, despite only arriving two days ago, proved a tough proposition with Farveez Maharoof nipping out two with the new ball, Thilan Thushara a brace in the middle and Ajantha Mendis three at the end.

Tatenda Taibu, the former captain, offered the most prolonged resistance as he finished on 45 off 35 deliveries to push Zimbabwe into three figures. He was at the crease in the fourth over after Maharoof removed both openers and Thushara, the left-arm quick, further dented the progress with a tight spell of 2 for 14.

Mendis has proved too good for far better players than Zimbabwe's lower order and he helped himself to a few easy pickings. Elton Chigumbura was caught behind after clubbing 12 off nine balls and Prosper Utseya was stranded by one of Mendis's carrom balls, which turn away from the right handers.

Even in unfamiliar conditions, and with a few new faces in the batting line-up, Sri Lanka shouldn't have too many problems knocking off the runs.

How to Do Live Streaming

Recording

We have to start by recording. (Of course, if you’re streaming a pre-recorded file, you can skip this step.) esdrec, part of the esound package, grabs the sound input and spits it out on the command line. (esd, the esound daemon, can be a little fussy, so you might have to killall esd and start esd in another window a couple times to get it to work.)

Then we can pass the sound to our favorite encoder. If you want something popular, lame does a decent job of encoding to MP3. If you’re doing music, you might want to use Ogg Vorbis, here oggenc will work just fine. For voice, speex (and speexenc) works pretty nicely.

If you want to stream more than one format, feel free to set up additional sound pipes; esdrec can be run as many times as necessary.

Finally, save the output to a file.

When you’re done, you should have something that looks like:

esdrec | lame - - > archive.mp3

If the recording machine is different from the server, you’ll need something a little more complicated. Instead of saving to a file, you’ll want to pipe it thru ssh to a file on the server. (Depending on your situation, you might even want to pipe the raw stream to the server and do the compression there.) It’ll look like this:

esdrec | lame - - | ssh me@myserver sh -c "cat >> archive.mp3"

(The MP3 format is pretty forgiving, so if you get disconnected just run this command again and keep appending. Everything should work fine, although you’ll probably get a little skip where the connection cut out.)

Publishing

Now let’s set up the server. If you just want to stream to yourself and other people with accounts on your server, you can use ssh. On the client, call:

ssh me@myserver [command here]

(We’ll cover the possible commands a little later.)

If you want to publish the stream, you probably want the ucspi-tcp package, which will broadcast the stream on a specific port, say 9940:

tcpserver 0 9940 [command here]

(0 is the IP to run it on, a special case meaning ‘the default IP’.) If you’re an encryption geek, you can use ucspi-ssl and sslserver instead. (Run them the same way, though.)

Streaming bandwidth and storage

Unicast Connections require multiple connections from the same streaming server even when it streams the same content

Streaming media storage size (in the common file system measurements megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, and so on) is calculated from streaming bandwidth and length of the media with the following formula (for a single user and file):

storage size (in megabytes) = length (in seconds) · bit rate (in kbit/s) / 8,388.608

(since 1 megabyte = 8 * 1,048,576 bits = 8,388.608 kilobits)

This is equivalent to around 125 GiB per hour. Of course, using a Multicast protocol the server sends out only a single stream that is common to all users. Hence, such a stream would only use 300 kbit/s of serving bandwidth. See below for more information on these protocols.

Colombo

Viharamahadevi Park: The oldest and the largest park in Colombo, it is a riot of colours with flowering plants blooming from March to May. Also a feast for the eyes is the Cinnamon Gardens, where the elegant tree lined streets houses the palatial residences of the ruling elite.

Dehiwala Zoo: 11 kms from the fort, this zoo has a rich collection of flora and fauna from all across the world. It houses the famous Mini Medura , an aquarium displaying over 500 varieties of aquatic species.

Galle Face Green: This promenade on the sea face is the favourite haunt for children, teenagers, lovers , vendors and all those who want to indulge in their past time activities under the open sky.

Temples: Prominent centres of Buddhist importance are Vajiramaya temple at Bambalapitiya, Raja Maha Viharaya at Bellanwalia and Gotami Viharaya at Borella. There are also Hindu temples like the Kathiseran temples at Pettah, dedicated to the war god Skanda; Sri Poonnambalam Vaneswaram temple at Koch-chikade and Sri Bala Selva Vinayagar temple at Colombo 10, dedicated to Lord Siva and Ganesha.

Churches: St. Peter’s Church near the Grand Oriental Hotel, Wolvendaal Church at Wolfendahl Street are some of the oldest Churches in Colombo which attract tourists of all faiths. Among others, mention may be made of the famous Church of St. Anthony at the intersection of the Sea Street and St. Anthony’s Mawatha.

Mosques: Two most famous mosques of Colombo are Jami-ul-Alfar and the Memm Hamafi mosque, both located at Dr. C.W.W. Kannangara Mawatha. The former is a red and white candy striped mosque dating back to 1909 while the latter is a more traditional grayish one.

Kandy

Historical records suggest that the original city Senkadagalapura was established by the King Wickramabahu III during the period of his reign from 1357-1374 AD. The history of Kandy and it's townscape has been in a state of flux from the beginning of British rule, particularly after the 1818 rebellion. But with its rich heritage of living monuments, Kandy continues to be the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. Today, Kandy city is well known for its scenic beauty, favorable climate, cultural values and historical significance.

Food for the Eyes and Soul
Dalada Maligawa: With its Sinhalese style architecture, this is undoubtedly the greatest attraction of the city. Dalada Maligawa is one of the most sacred places for the Buddhists all over the world. The most prominent feature of the building is the Octagon, the place from where the king addressed the public on important occasions.

Maha Vishnu Devale: Located towards the northwest of the palace, this is a shrine built in the 18th century and dedicated to Lord Vishnu of the Hindu Pantheon, but also worshiped by the Buddhists.

Natha Devale: Dating back to the 14th century, this is oldest shrine in Kandy and one of the best examples showing the influence of South Indian architecture.

Gangarama Vihara: 2 kilometers to the east of the Palace complex, this is an image house built around a ten metre high standing Buddha statue, carved out of an in-situ natural rock.

Hindalgara Vihara: Situated amidst the serene ambience of a location covered with long green trees and bounded by a cascading stream flowing through the forest, this is an ancient temple belonging to the Malwatta Vihara. It is at the Peradeniya - Galaha road.

Lankatilaka Vihara: This image house is considered to be one of the best examples of extant traditional Sinhalese temple architecture.

Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya: Surrounded by the river Mahaweli on three sides and connected to the opposite bank by a suspension bridge, this is the best garden in the country. The garden is a paradigm of the wealth and beauty of the tropics with over hundred varieties of palm trees, wondrous arches of glossy foliage, lovely fernery and orchid houses with rare blossoms and spice trees in groves. It is located at Peradeniya.

The Lake: Located at the center of the city, the lake with a traditional artistic feature is attractive and keeps the environment cool- a prime reason for the city being considered as one of the best tourist resorts of the island. The banks of the lake is dotted with a variety of trees of which some are historic. Naturally, the narrow path along the Lake is a popular hang out zone for the city dwellers, particularly the lovers.

Climate: The annual average rainfall is around 1905-3175 mm. The main rainfall season is South-west monsoon. During the Inter-monsoonal seasons, thunderstorm showers are frequent in the central island. Kandy has an average temperature level between a range of 21-26 C.

Galle

Location: Southern Coast, 116 kms from ColomboFounded in the 16th century by the Portuguese, Galle reached the height of its development in the 18th century, before the arrival of the British. It is the quintessence of a fortified city built by Europeans in South and South-East Asia, showing a rich medley of European architectural styles and South Asian traditions. A must visit for the colonial architecture freaks!

Attractions of the cityThe

Dutch Fort: The main attraction of the city is the Dutch fort built in the 17th century. It is one of the most extensive monuments left by European colonialists. Although many of the structures that made up the fort are in serious decay, the outer walls are completely intact. A stroll along the top of the walls at dusk gives a fantastic view of cricket games, an old lighthouse, and breath taking sights of the town's harbour.

Churches and Quaint Buildings: Within the fort there are several old churches which deserve a visit. A Dutch church dating back to the mid 18th century holds the place of prominence among all the churches.Walking down the narrow streets one can have a good look at the old buildings reminiscient of the colonial era.

The New Oriental Hotel: The New Oriental Hotel, one of the oldest in Sri Lanka, is a nice place for a visit. However, more than the rooms its the porch and the balcony which are in a somewhat better shape.

The Dutch Museum: This small museum at 31 Leynbaan Street housed in a restored Dutch mansion contains paintings, prints, documents, furniture and ceramics belonging to the Dutch colonial era.

National Maritime Museum: This small museum housed in the Old Gatehouse has a collection of- shabby ship models, charts and other maritime memorabilia.

Around Galle

Unawatuna Beach: Located 5 kms away from the main city, this is pretty good place along the sea side.

International ConnectivityAir: The Bandarnaike international airport is located 32kms away from Colombo, the capital city.

Sea: Galle is an international sea port with passenger services to and from various important ports across the world.Domestic TransportationThere are no flight services to Galle.
